We welcome you to our website, and whether you live in Plymouth or thousands of miles away, we are able to help you. We have customers in many parts of the world, and we count it a privilege to play a small part in distributing God's Word far and near.

Special Services

National Book Tokens
These can be exchanged in hundreds of bookshops throughout the UK. They are sold in multiples of £1 with a free gift wallet and envelope. If you wish to purchase a Book Token please state if it is for a male/female child/adult recipient so that we can choose an appropriate gift wallet.
Book Tokens can only be exchanged for books, but this includes books in electronic format such as Bible software.

Christian Literature Centre Gift Vouchers
These vouchers can only be exchanged at "The Upper Room" but can be exchanged for books, CD's, DVD's, gifts - in fact, for anything that we sell. They are available for any amount and are supplied in our own gift card with an envelope.

Christian Link Gift Vouchers
These vouchers in multiples of £1 can be exchanged in any paticipating Christian bookshop. We both sell and exchange these vouchers. They are not accepted in all Christian bookshops, so please check with us before purchasing.

Leadership Bookclub
This is open to anyone in Church leadership. By registering you will receive a quarterly brochure from IVP, giving offers on various books. These books can then be ordered from us at the special price by quoting your membership number and if you live in the UK but outside Plymouth we will make no postage charge for Leadership Bookclub orders.

We take all major credit and debit cards except American Express.

We offer a standing order/subscription system for all dated Bible Reading Notes. These can be collected from the shop or posted. If posted, we ask for a 12 month subscription to be paid in advance.

We carry their "On The Way" undated material, plus other undated material from their range.

Living Stones (Susan Sayers)
Pebbles, Rocks and Boulders as well as the All-age Resouce Book and Prayers Of Intercession. This material is based on the Common Worship lectionary and is available for years A, B and C.

How to find us

We are located in the city of Plymouth, which is in the South West of England, in the county of Devon.

Christian Literature Centre

Our shop is in Cornwall Street, in Plymouth's City Centre. At the top of Cornwall street is the new Drake's Circus shopping mall and Marks and Spencer. Also at the top end of the street is the Plymouth Methodist Central Hall and Discovery Centre. The Discovery Centre Cafe (open 9am-2.30pm, Monday-Friday) serves good food and drinks, with their very popular breakfasts. The Discovery Shop is open 10am-2.30pm Monday-Friday and sells fair-trade food, local crafts, gifts, books and cards. We help the Central Hall run this shop by supplying the books, cards and gifts. There are always bargain books to be found here!

The Upper Room is located further down Cornwall Street, opposite Woolworths and above the Gembox, next door to the Sony Centre. The nearest car park is Mayflower Street West which is immediately behind us.

We are within easy walking distance from BHS, Virgin, Debenhams, Argos, WH Smith and other high street names. Close by is Armada Way, home to many banks and building societies.

FAQ's

Things People Often Ask Us

There are many things we are asked by customers during a routine week. Here we will post some of the questions that come up most frequently, and our answers to them.

? Can I pay by credit/debit card?
Yes, we take all major credit/debit cards, including Electron and Solo. The only card we are unable to take is American Express.

? Can you order a book from America?
We can order virtually any book in print, and an increasing number of print-on-demand books. We have a very good USA supplier - if they have it in stock (which we can check on line), once we order it is with us within a week.

? It's available on Amazon, can you get it at the same price?
Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes the popular titles are loss leaders for Amazon or other internet traders - ie. their bait, on which they take a loss to get your trade. Remember, you don't have to pay the postage when collecting from the shop, and if there are any problems we sort them out, not you. If we post to you we only charge the cost of postage to us, which on one or two normal sized books is less than £2.75!

? I only know the author. I haven't many details. Can you order for me?
We'll give it a go. Try us and see!

? This book/CD isn't really what I expected. Can I return it and get a refund?
Provided the product is returned within 28 days, unused and with a valid receipt, we will exchange or refund. We cannot give a refund without a receipt, but we will consider an exchange or a credit note depending on the circumstances.

? I ordered a book from you last year but I can't remember the title, and I'd like another one. Can you find out what book it was?
If it was ordered in your name since November 2005, yes we can.

? Can I get change if my book is less than the value of my National Book Token?
If the change is less than 50p, yes - otherwise we need to give the "change" by issuing Book Tokens for the value.

? I can't get up the stairs at the Upper Room. How can I get what I want?
We can send books etc. to the Discovery Centre shop, and if you know the kind of item you are looking for you can ring the doorbell at the bottom of the stairs and we will come down and serve you.

? When are you going to get a downstairs shop?
It's in our long-term planning, but at the moment it is not a feasible option. For the near future we will be staying where we are, but trying to develop ways of working outside the shop premises.

? The book I'm looking for is OUT OF PRINT, can you still get a copy?
Possibly yes - we'll certainly try! We have access to a large number of 2nd hand book suppliers, and we make no charge for searching for you. Once we find a book we will let you know the price and condition of the book, and you can decide if you want to go ahead and purchase it.
